State Employees Take Action on the Budget

May 3 Political Conference

In the short time since state employees started building our new union with SEIU:

Hundreds of state members have met with and talked with lawmakers about the budget.
Our Purple Brigade, currently 188 members committed to political change (and growing), is now the largest independent political force in the state and is on the streets every weekend talking to voters about candidates who recognize the value of state workers and who, when elected, will welcome our participation when important decisions need to be made.
We've launched a big campaign to gain the same freedom to form a union and negotiate improvements that employees who work for private businesses and cities like Tempe and Chandler already possess.

It sounds obvious - we need to elect legislators who support public service employees.  A simple goal, but one that will take some hard work to accomplish.

The Choice is Clear

In 1998, the Arizona State Legislature (HB 1354) promised to bring state employee compensation to within 5% of market compensation – meaning state workers’ wages and benefits would be competitive with employees in the broader economy. The Arizona Department of Administration Advisory Recommendation on State Employee Salaries reaffirmed that promise in 2005 and in 2006.  That hasn't happened.

We CAN do something about it!

Arizona state employee salaries rank among the lowest in the nation, averaging almost $16,000 less than their counterparts in Colorado and just under $5,000 less than Utah state employees!

Governor Meets with SEIU Members

Governor Janet Napolitano recently dropped by SEIU Arizona’s Phoenix headquarters for an informal conversation with SEIU members about the challenges facing the state – and public service employees – as a result of Arizona’s rapid population growth.

STATE CHAPTER
It’s not a vacation. A half dozen SEIU members from the state of Oregon visited Arizona in September to talk to Arizona state employees about the benefits of membership in SEIU.
