"The Potential of a Greater Good"

SEIU Tempe Chapter member, Dave Morriston, writes an 'open letter' to his Tempe city co-workers and all SEIU members.

Dave Morriston's 'Open Letter' to Members

A number of years ago I was fortunate enough to read a book entitled "A Tale of Two Cities" by Charles Dickens. The opening sentence begins "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times."  These words some how seem prophetic enough for our day and age, as things certainly seem to be both good and bad.

The employees of the City of Tempe are in place to enjoy a positive position provided by labor/management negotiations for the upcoming MOU. The considerations made by Management are direct results of continual efforts made by our Representatives, active members and SEIU staff.  These efforts describe equal treatment in wage and salary considerations, wage compression, and sabbatical issues.

In a year of economic downturn, where large numbers of our fellow Americans are not fortunate enough to realize these advantages, we as a Union should not only be cognizant of our achievements, but prepared to advance these principles to, and for, our brothers and sisters in other circumstances.  As the story in Dickens book continues we, find working people rally around a common ideal, one shared, and championed by all. The ideal of maintaining quality of life for our families and friends must now be the call to action we deliver to our members and co-workers.

The future that might be enjoyed by our families and our children's families demands not only our best intentions, but our active participation, and in so doing insures our continued success. As " A Tale of Two Cities " concludes, a main character finds himself facing a choice, to give and realize the potential of a greater good, or to do nothing and continue as is.

Although the choice taken by Dickens character required a hefty sacrifice, the requirements asked of us as SEIU Local 5 members are not so hefty, perhaps 5-10 hours a month to assist with Political activities, or maybe just a conversation with a co worker about the lasting benefits of organized labor. These actions will help solidify, encourage and advance the ideals we as SEIU Local 5 members believe in. Please consider and participate in our continued success. Thanks for your time.
