Gilbert Votes: Round Two

If We Have to Say it Again, We Will!

On May 12-16, Gilbert town employees will be voting for the second time on whether to designate SEIU as their authorized representative.  Here’s why: In March, just under half of all Gilbert town employees participated in an election to choose SEIU as their authorized representative. More than 88% of them (197 to 28) did just that and voted SEIU “Yes”.

However, the ordinance authorizing the election, which was passed on a 6-1 vote by the Gilbert Town Council, left the meaning of ‘majority’ open to interpretation. Did ‘majority’ mean a majority of those VOTING or did it mean a majority of ALL Gilbert workers?

On April 29th, the Gilbert Town Council unanimously reconfirmed their original intent -- that a majority of those voting will determine the election’s outcome.   As this confirmation required a change to the original ordinance authorizing the vote, it was decided that a new vote had to be held.  A joint letter from Town Manager George Petit and SEIU Arizona gives you all the details.
