In an important victory for public service employees throughout Arizona, Gilbert town employees voted 197-28 in favor of SEIU becoming their authorized representative.

The results are in. Three members qualified for the ballot, collecting more than 300 signatures between them. They are SEIU State Director Scott Washburn, Chandler Chapter President James Kame and State Organizing Committee member Martha Seaman.

For the first time ever, members from SEIU Arizona will be part of the 3,500 strong delegation representing 1.9 million SEIU members at the 2008 International Convention in San Juan, Puerto Rico this June.

Crossing the Threshold

The small ceremony in Michael Smarik’s Phoenix office Jan. 14 took less than 10 minutes but it marked a real milestone in our drive to build a strong union of state employees.  “I’m very, very happy to be able to present you with this book of signed membership cards,” said Martha Seaman as she placed a thick binder and a thin CD on Michael’s desk.
